6061-T6 Aluminum: Properties & Cost

6061-T6 aluminum machined equipment enclosure

목차

6061-T6 is the most common heat-treated condition of 6061 aluminum alloy and one of the most frequently selected materials in CNC machining projects. It offers a balanced combination of moderate strength, good corrosion resistance, excellent machinability, and relatively affordable material cost compared with many high-strength aluminum alloys.

This article explains what 6061-T6 aluminum is, its chemical composition, material properties, advantages and limitations, typical applications, and market price references to help determine whether it is suitable for your CNC machining project.

What Is 6061-T6 Aluminum?

6061 is a heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium-silicon (Al-Mg-Si) alloy and one of the most widely used alloys in the 6xxx aluminum series. It is commonly supplied in the form of bars, plates, and extruded profiles for manufacturing applications.

The “T6” designation refers to the heat treatment condition. The material undergoes solution heat treatment, quenching, and artificial aging (typically around 160–190°C) to achieve near-peak mechanical strength.

With a density of 2.70 g/cm³, 6061-T6 aluminum weighs about one-third of steel. Its combination of strength, lightweight properties, machinability, and corrosion resistance makes it one of the most commonly used aluminum alloys for CNC milling, turning, and precision machining.

Common supply forms include:

  • Round bars
  • Plates
  • Extruded profiles
  • Tubes
  • Forgings

Chemical Composition of 6061-T6 Aluminum

The primary strengthening elements in 6061 aluminum are magnesium (Mg) and silicon (Si). During the T6 aging process, these elements form Mg₂Si precipitates, which improve the alloy’s strength and stability.

The typical chemical composition is shown below (percentage by weight):

요소 Content (%)
알루미늄(Al) 잔액
마그네슘(Mg) 0.8-1.2
실리콘(Si) 0.4-0.8
구리(Cu) 0.15-0.40
크롬(Cr) 0.04-0.35
철(Fe) ≤0.70
망간 (Mn) ≤0.15
아연(Zn) ≤0.25
티타늄(Ti) ≤0.15

Magnesium and silicon are the main strengthening elements. Although copper and chromium are present in smaller amounts, they help improve strength and corrosion resistance. Elements such as iron, manganese, zinc, and titanium are controlled within specified limits to maintain consistent material performance.

6061-T6 Mechanical Properties and Corrosion Resistance

6061-T6 offers a good balance of strength and mechanical performance after heat treatment.

Unlike carbon steel, 6061-T6 aluminum does not rust. Its natural oxide layer provides basic corrosion protection, making it suitable for general industrial environments and some outdoor applications.

However, for long-term exposure to high-salt environments such as marine conditions, additional protection such as anodizing or coating is recommended.

Compared with steel, 6061-T6 has lower hardness, which means its surface is more likely to be scratched or damaged by hard objects. Proper surface treatment should be selected based on the actual operating environment.

Advantages and Disadvantages of 6061-T6 Aluminum

6061-T6 is positioned as a well-balanced aluminum alloy. It is not the strongest aluminum alloy available, nor is it the lowest-cost option, but it provides a practical balance between strength, machinability, corrosion resistance, and price. This balance is one of the main reasons why it is widely used in CNC machining.

장점

  • Good strength-to-weight ratio: Suitable for lightweight structural components.
  • Good corrosion resistance: The natural oxide layer provides basic protection and reduces maintenance requirements.
  • Excellent machinability: Produces stable cutting performance, controllable chips, and good surface finishes.
  • Flexible surface treatment options: Suitable for anodizing, sand blasting, polishing, and other finishing processes.
  • Stable material supply: Bars, plates, and profiles are widely available and easy to source.

Disadvantages

  • Lower strength than high-strength aluminum alloys such as 7075 and 2024, making it unsuitable for extremely high-load structures.
  • Lower hardness than steel, making the surface more vulnerable to scratches and dents.
  • Not ideal for long-term high-temperature environments, as strength decreases significantly above approximately 150°C.
  • Average fatigue performance, requiring additional evaluation for parts exposed to repeated cyclic loading.

Typical Applications of 6061-T6 Aluminum Machining

For parts that require lightweight construction, corrosion resistance, good machinability, and controlled cost, 6061-T6 is often one of the first materials considered.

일반적인 애플리케이션은 다음과 같습니다:

  • Automotive industry: Brackets, housings, battery trays, and lightweight structural components.
  • Aerospace industry: Non-load-bearing structural parts, interior components, and tooling fixtures.
  • Consumer electronics: Housings, heat sinks, and structural frames.
  • Industrial equipment: Fixtures, valve blocks, hydraulic components, and protective covers.

Typical manufacturing processes involve CNC machining from bars, plates, or extruded profiles, followed by surface treatments such as anodizing when required.

6061-T6 Aluminum Price: Market Reference

6061 aluminum is considered a moderately priced industrial material.Actual pricing depends on several factors, including:

  • LME aluminum price fluctuations;
  • Purchase quantity;
  • Material dimensions and specifications;
  • Supplier channels.

Typical market references are:

재료 유형 가격 참조
Bulk aluminum ingot/bar purchase Approx. $2,500–3,500/ton
Large-volume domestic purchase Approx. RMB 18,000–25,000/ton
Small-quantity plate/bar retail purchase Approx. $6–12/kg

For CNC machining projects, material cost is only one part of the total manufacturing cost.

The final quotation is usually influenced more significantly by:

  • Machining time;
  • Part complexity;
  • Tolerance requirements;
  • Surface finishing;
  • Order quantity.

자주 묻는 질문

Is 6061 Aluminum a High-Quality Aluminum Alloy?

Yes, it can be considered a high-quality industrial aluminum alloy. 6061 is one of the most mature and widely used structural aluminum alloys. Its advantage is not achieving the highest performance in a single category, but providing a strong balance between strength, machinability, corrosion resistance, and cost. This balance is why it has become one of the most commonly selected aluminum alloys for CNC machining.

Is 6061-T6 Aerospace Grade Aluminum?

6061-T6 is often associated with aerospace applications, but its role should be understood correctly. It is commonly used for aircraft interior components, brackets, and non-load-bearing structural parts, while high-strength aerospace structural components are more commonly made from alloys such as 7075 and 2024.

In simple terms, 6061-T6 is a general-purpose aluminum alloy suitable for aerospace applications, but it is not considered a primary high-strength aerospace structural alloy.

What Is the Highest Quality Aluminum Alloy?

There is no single aluminum alloy that can be considered the best for every application. Material selection depends on specific performance requirements.

The right material should be selected based on performance requirements, manufacturing method, and cost rather than choosing the so-called “highest-grade” aluminum alloy.

Is 6061-T6 Forged?

Not necessarily. 6061 is a wrought aluminum alloy that can be produced through forging, but for CNC machining projects it is more commonly purchased in the form of bars, plates, or extruded profiles and then machined into finished components.

The T6 designation only describes the heat treatment condition (solution heat treatment, quenching, and artificial aging) and is not related to the forming method.
